Four Weeks Before the Open House

-Schedule babysitters or petsitters.

-Book carpet and house cleaning services for a few days before the open house, or make sure to set aside time when you can do the deep cleaning yourself.

-Line up a contractor to fix any maintenance issues.

-De-clutter every room.

Three Weeks Before the Open House

-Get some fluffy white towels for the bathroom and an inviting doormat for the front door.

-Designate a shoebox for each bathroom to stow away personal items on the day of the open house.

Two Weeks Before the Open House

-Clean light fixtures, ceiling fans, light switches, and around doorknobs.

-Power wash the house, deck, sidewalk, and driveway.

One Week Before the Open House

-Put out your new doormat to break it in.

-Make sure guests can get up close and personal to the furnace, air conditioning, and appliances. They’ll likely want to check how old these items are.

-Clean the inside of appliances and declutter kitchen cabinets and drawers.

Week of the Open House

-If you’re up for it, get some ready-made cookie dough. Nothing says “welcome home” like the smell of freshly baked cookies!

-Buy a bag of lemons or apples to display in a pretty bowl.

-Let your agent know if you are running low on brochures/flyers.

-Clean windows and mow the lawn.

Day Before the Open House

-Make sure there are plenty of open-house signs pointing the way to your home.

-Clean up yard clutter.

Day of the Open House

-Put checkbooks, bank statements, jewelry, prescription drugs, and other valuables in the trunk of your car, with a friend or neighbor, or in a safe.

-Set the dining room table for a special occasion dinner.

-Check outdoor play equipment for spider webs or creepy crawlies.

-Remove personal items from the bathroom and store them in a shoebox under the sink.

-Put away kitchen countertop appliances.

Right Before the Open House

-Bake cookies or put on a pot of fresh coffee to make your home smell extra inviting.

-Hang new towels in the bathroom.

-Put your bowl of apples or lemons on the kitchen table or bar counter.

-Put away throw rugs as they can be a tripping hazard.

During the Open House

-Enjoy an afternoon away from the house and let your agent do what they do best!
